SAMPLE midterm exam

The following are quiz like problems. Each will be worth 4 pts.

1. A particle moves along the x axis. Its path is described by the function x(t)=2t2-20t. Calculate its displacement from t=1s to t=2s.

2. A particle moves along the x axis. Its path is described by the function x(t)=2t2-20t. Calculate its average velocity from t=1s to t=2s.

3. A particle moves along the x axis. Its path is described by the function x(t)=2t2-20t. Calculate acceleration between from t=1s to t=2s.

4. A particle moves along the x axis. Its path is described by the function x(t)=2t2-20t. Calculate its instantaneous velocity at t=1s

5. Write the vector a = 1i+1j in magnitude angle notation.

6. Write the vector a=9, è = 45 in component notation.

7. Calculate the dot product of a = 1i+2j+1k and b=1i+1j-3k.

8. Calculate the cross product of a = 1i+2j+1k and b=1i+1j-3k.

9. Calculate the dot product of vectors a and b if a=2, b=3, and the angle between them is 90 degrees.

10. Calculate the magnitude of the cross product of vectors a and b if a=2, b=3, and the angle between them is 90 degrees.

11. A particle travels on the x axis. If its velocity is 10m/s at t=2s, what is its velocity at t=0 seconds if it accelerates at 1m/s2?

12. What is the maximum height of a ball thrown upwards at 10 m/s? (assume g=10m/s2)

13. How far does a ball go if it has an initial velocity of +10m/s vertically and +10 m/s horizontally? (assume g=10m/s2)

14. A particle moves in a circular path of radius 1m. What is its acceleration if it has a tangential speed of 2m/s?

15. A 10 kg book lies flat on a table. Draw a free body diagram of the forces on the book.

The below is a textbook sample problem. Expect two problems of the same difficulty. 10 pts each

16. A cord holds a 15 kg block stationary on a frictionless plane inclined at angle è=27 degrees. (a) What are the magnitudes of the force T on the block from the cord and the normal force FN on the block from the plane? We now cut the cord. Does the block accelerate as it slides down the inclined plane? If so what is its acceleration?

The below is a conceptual problem done in class. Expect two problems like this. 10 pts each

17. Here are three pairs of initial and final positions, respectively, along the x axis. Which pairs give a negative displacement: (a) -3m, +5m; (b) -3m, -7m; (c) 7m, -3m?

For the final, there will be 4 conceptual problems and 4 homework type problems. Each of these type problems will be worth about 5 points each (40% of exam). There will be 30 quiz plug in problems. Each will be worth 2 points (60% of exam).
